Matar, a Senegalese fisherman crosses paths with N’Zibou a crazy wise man who measures the clouds. N’Zibou  questions Matar about his search for identity. Matar finds a Belgian passport on a beach in Dakar after which he disappears.  The film explores the questions migration and identity in a poetic way. This artistic  hybrid  is influenced by a  Belgian surrealism of Magritte and Senegalese wolof expression of magic. ”Dem Dem” means ”leaving” in wolof language. In Senegal, a lot of young men migrate to Europe without telling their family.

Best friends Tevo (Richie Tevin) and Zizuke (Arnold Aganze) have just finished their university course in social sciences. Zizuke has a job as a waiter at a local bar, The Pearl (a bar on Jinja Main Street), and Tevo is pursuing his passion for photography. After being given a camera by Martha (Diane Vuletich), his new muzungu girlfriend, Tevo starts to look for ways he can make money from his work. A chance meeting with Elizabeth (Poppy Spowage), a tourist who has come to see Gorillas in Uganda, provides him with just the answer. Tevo’s photography swiftly becomes a pictorial N.G.O project that supports women and girls

17:00 CALL ME THIEF

Noem My Skollie/ Call Me Thief, is about young man, “AB” who gets arrested for a petty crime and raises his status in prison by captivating the hardened gangsters with his knack for telling stories. He becomes the “prison cinema” whilst his childhood friend becomes the concubine of the gang boss.  On their release from jail ‘AB’ finds romance and begins a new path in life as a writer but his friends rope him into a murder for which they all face the hang-man’s noose.  The film is set near Cape Town, South Africa in the 1960’s and is based on the life-story of John W. Fredericks who wrote the screenplay.

20:00 Casamance: Sound Track of a Journey

Jairo Zavala, a Spanish singer and songwriter with African and Latin-American roots and member of the indie-rock band  Calexico, is invited by Ángel Carmona to participate in a series of radio interviews. As an omniscient narrator, Carmona’s radio voice strings together Zavala’s adventures through Senegal on the trail of a particular griot: Lamine Konté. On this journey from Dakar to Casamance he witnesses the return on stage of an ”afromandinga” music band doomed into oblivion 30 years ago, the Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès. There, he gets to know about the African music genres that went to America only to return home, such as the soul, rock, rumba, etc., and the griot mysticism of Casamance, Land of Kings, where Zavala seeks the inspirations to compose the soundtrack of the journey itself.

This requires a search into the depths and  secrets that can shift the personal world. The film takes us to the perspective of the world of the blind and the relationship between they build, exploring when the obscure faces the clear.

The film explores the stigma appended to people who make natural choices, which others consider to be bold, at times forcing people to submerge into  the shadows of their companions for the rest of their lives. .

Between April 6 and July 4, 1994, the genocide of the Tutsis and the massacres of moderate Hutus did about a million dead in Rwanda.

While in the country massacres were committed on a large scale, at Ntarabana in northern Rwanda, Rugwiza Frodouald and Mukankundiye Anne-Marie hid and protected Tutsi risking their lives.

Shortly after the end of the genocide, Murekaze Anastasia a genocide survivor, was able to find the strength to forgive and reconcile with those who had murdered her husband and children.

Ori Inu: In Search of Self is a coming of age story about a young immigrant woman who must choose between conforming her identity and spirituality to the cultural norms of America or revisiting her roots in the Afro-Brazilian religion called Candomble.

The film is the brainchild of sibling duo Emann and Chelsea Odufu. They are both creatives and art activists hailing from Newark, NJ who aim to create media that interrogate the idea of identity and the complexities of what it means to be a Black American or immigrant within the modern context of our society. The film stars Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins and feature the grammy nominated Afro-Pean duo Les Nubiens among others.

After his initiation he participates in a rare and exceptional ceremony and by the end of his quest comes to realise the guiding and unifying role of the Gèlèdè cult.

Tchinda is one of most beloved women in Cape Verde, especially after she came out as a transgender person in the local newspaper in 1998. Since then, her name has become the term used by locals to name queer Cape Verdeans.
